Hand-Me-Downs

Today’s prompt from The Daily Post is about Hand-me-downs.

Clothes and toys, recipes and jokes, advice and prejudice: we all have to handle all sorts of hand-me-downs every day. Tell us about some of the meaningful hand-me-downs in your life.

Man in chainsI was staring at my sister. Normally I’d refer to her as my evil stepsister—mostly because she was  cruel, and I sincerely wished we weren’t related. “What?”

“I think I’ve outgrown him, little brother. It’s time he becomes a hand-me-down.” My breath caught. There was nothing I’d rather have than her boyfriend, but I didn’t dare hope she meant it, much less that Joel actually would want to be with me.

“Are you serious?”

She glared. “Of course I’m serious! He’s been begging me to give him away for a while now. It’s getting tedious.”

“To me?”

“Who else?”
