I stood as close to him as I could. “I’m sorry, it’s just that they look so lonely.”
He held me close, kissed my hair. “Yeah, I know, but they’re not your responsibility. And to be completely honest, you look like a lunatic standing there talking to them through the fence every day.”
I opened my mouth to respond just as I heard a meow from the cat carrier I’d hidden on my way in.
