Guest Post | Impeccable Credentials by Ellie Thomas

The first guest of the year is the lovely Ellie Thomas 🥰 She’s here to talk about her latest release, Impeccable Credentials. Welcome Ellie!

Impeccable Credentials Promo 3

Thanks, lovely Ofelia, for having me as your guest again! I’m Ellie, and I write MM Historical Romance novellas. Today I’m chatting about my Impeccable Credentials, my new 25k word novella, currently in the 20% off new release sale at JMS Books until January 12th.

This is the third story in my Town Bronze series and focuses on Julian Buchanan, the final member of my ensemble to find love. On the surface, Julian is the most privileged of my trio. He is from a noble family and has social standing and the prospect of inherited wealth. Added to that, he’s good looking and athletic. But in Impeccable Credentials, we learn about the uneasy compromises Julian has made beneath that enviable surface.

Julian knows that he is expected to marry in the pattern of his older siblings and that his prospective wife will be chosen by his cold and ambitious father, Sir Roger. Julian is astute aware enough to realise he is not attracted to women. He also has the self-preservation to hide that fact.

He assumes that he will eventually go through with his father’s plans but has still some time to adjust. However, when Sir Roger orders Julian to pay urgent court to a young heiress with almost immediate marriage in mind that causes him great inner turmoil. This strain causes Julian to act on his attraction to Rafe Ingles, an educator and intellectual radical, resulting in mutual discovery and a slim chance of happiness.

Julian has come a long way from the polished figurehead in Town Bronze the first novella in the series. The cracks start to show in book 2, Pantaloons and Petticoats as a result of his father’s orders. In Impeccable Credentials, Julian is faced with an impossible decision between duty and love. However, this is not clear cut, and there are huge personal risks and no easy answers. If he takes the wrong step, he might lose all his worldly standing and drive away the man he loves.

Outwardly, twenty-one-year-old Julian Buchanan is the epitome of wealth, breeding and good looks. He’s a pink of the ton in Regency London, and his position in society is assured. But beneath his impeccable surface, Julian is riddled with doubt.

Matters come to a head in the autumn of 1812 when his autocratic father, Sir Roger Buchanan, orders Julian to court an heiress and propose marriage. Finally, Julian must acknowledge that he has no interest in women. At the same time, he becomes involved with Rafe Ingles, a radical intellectual whose beliefs concur with Julian’s inward convictions.

With pressure building and so much at stake, can Julian find the courage to break the habit of a lifetime and choose love and freedom over duty?

Excerpt:

“So why are you admitting this now?” Rafe’s voice held no accusation, simply the wholehearted focus that defined him.

“My father,” Julian’s voice cracked. He cleared his throat and carried on doggedly. “Or rather his intentions. He recently urged me to court a young lady, a notable heiress, with the intention of betrothal. I was told to propose to her this morning during a tête-à-tête arranged by her aunt.”

“From your tone, I gather you have no romantic aspirations towards the lady?”

“None. Nor does she have any for me.” The high polish on Julian’s boots continued to captivate him. “I have grown to like and admire her, but this was never a matter of mutual attachment, only a business agreement between our relatives.”

“So neither of you is willing to be married?”

“We are not. We barely know each other and have been flung together most flagrantly during six short weeks. It’s garnered a great deal of avid speculation in society.”

A man like Rafe, willingly forgoing the privileges of rank to dwell amongst the poor and dispossessed was above courting good opinion. Julian felt a rush of shame that he cared for the judgement of others.

“Did the young lady accept your proposal?”

“She did not.” Julian smiled bitterly. “She has been a great deal more circumspect than I in this affair. The lady has alerted her brother in advance and as we speak, he is whisking her away from the perils of fortune hunters.”

“I hope you don’t include yourself in that category.” Rafe’s voice held a hint of steel.

“I might as well be. I should have stood up to my father or tried to circumvent his stratagems at least.”

“If the young lady is under her brother’s escort, surely your mutual dilemma is resolved?”

“I wish.” Julian’s smile was a sour twist of the lips. “Once my father learns of her departure, he will simply select another for me to woo at his will.”

“I can appreciate your unwillingness to be imposed upon, although I understand it is the way of the polite world. But if you have no other options, perhaps you and the next young lady will find each other amenable. You might find mutual affection despite unpromising beginnings.”

“I have no wish to wed merely from a sense of duty if at all. Not now. And possibly not ever.”

That shocking statement didn’t seem to disconcert Rafe. He merely nodded and said, “I see.”

Julian regarded Rafe like an oracle, as though he held the answer to his prayers, solving his predicament in one fell stroke.

“Would it be possible to relate your position to your father?” The tentativeness of Rafe’s question showed he anticipated Julian’s response.

With a grim smile, Julian said, “He wouldn’t listen or care. He expects strict obedience to his edicts. If I disagreed with him forcefully, he’d kill me.”

Julian tempered that statement at Rafe’s horrified expression. “Or cut me off without a penny at the very least. There is no room for sentiment in my father’s domain, simply calculation. My role is to obey his wishes to the letter.”

The sympathy in Rafe’s eyes turned them to the colour of dark honey. He shook his head sadly. “You must forgive me. I cannot comprehend such parental disdain.”

“Not at all. You must see me as the worst kind of spoiled brat, screaming and kicking in my silk-lined crib because I am thwarted. Unlike the people you assist, I am not starving or dispossessed.”

“But you are suffering all the same.”

Rafe leant forward and touched Julian’s wrist with his strong fingers. It was a gesture of understanding and solidarity, but to Julian’s shame and confusion, the caress made him throb with need.

He must have unwittingly communicated his inner turmoil. Rafe’s eyes widened in a glitter of silver and bronze. Oh, God, Julian thought miserably, as if things can’t get any worse. But there was no expected denunciation, no outburst to add to his humiliation. Silently, Rafe withdrew the contact.

Julian jerked with surprise to find those fingers grasping his chin, tilting his face upwards to meet Rafe’s gaze.

“You must think me remarkably obtuse. Until now, I had not recognised my deeper intentions,” Rafe said, a smile playing around his mobile lips. Then he stretched forward to kiss Julian.

Excerpt:

(From After Marcus by Nell Iris)

Marcus Nyman 1972 – 2018. Beloved husband.

“Hey you,” I say, caressing the headstone, knowing he’d be so pissed off at me for driving on a pitch-black December night and in such awful weather conditions.

What’s so important you need to risk your fucking life?

“You.”

A dead guy is never more important than your life, precious.

Precious. He never used endearments unless he was being ironic or upset at me for some reason.

“I needed to talk to you.”

His imaginary voice in my mind is right, though. I was irresponsible driving here, barely paying attention, after not sleeping at all. I’m lucky I managed in one piece.

It’s past four in the morning and the winds have picked up, sneaking underneath my clothing, whirling the falling snow around me until it finds its way into my ears, underneath my scarf, attacking me from every direction. I need to stand up right now and leave, or I won’t be able to drive home.

But I remain in my spot, needing to be close to him.

You’d be closer to me in our home, my treasure. These are just my cremated bones, they’re not me.

I know. His presence still lingers everywhere in the house we bought ten years ago when we needed to get out of the city. The people, the cars, the constant noise levels were all stressing me out, making it impossible for me to focus on my writing. When Marcus got a job offer from another university, we leaped at the chance to get out. That’s when we bought the house.

We met Joar the second day after our moving truck had dropped us and all our belongings off in our new home in the forest.

Marcus was the first to spot him as he came walking through the trees. “Oh-oooh, here comes trouble,” he said, and when I joined him by the window, I could understand his concerns.

“The trouble” my husband referred to of course Joar and even at a distance, he was huge, and he was dressed from head to toe in camo clothing. His long legs ate up the distance between the forest line and our house, and as he approached, I noticed the rifle resting in the crook of his elbow. But the weapon was open, the double barrel pointing down, and even though his face was serious, he didn’t look angry or menacing.

“Stay here,” Marcus said and stepped out onto the porch.

I snorted. His protective streak was ridiculous, but he knew better than to try to get me to stay put like I was a spoiled lapdog. I followed him outside, stepped into his space, close enough for our shoulders to touch, and slid my hand into his. Together, united as always, we waited as Joar approached.

Joar didn’t blink an eye at us holding hands. He just introduced himself, told us he lived further up the road, and welcomed us to the neighborhood before he left again, disappearing into the forest to go hunting.

“He was unexpectedly nice,” Marcus said after Joar left.

“Don’t be a judgmental jerk,” I said. “He doesn’t have to be a bad guy just because he looks a little rough.”

“Yeah, but the rifle didn’t help the impression that he’s not going to be on Santa’s nice-list this year.”

“Well, look at you. You look like a perfectly respectable, dry professor in your tweed jackets, but you’re definitely on Santa’s naughty list.” I pinched his ass.

“I am a respectable, dry professor.”

I stepped into his space, so close our noses touched, and grabbed his crotch. “You’re a professor, yes. But you won’t be dry,” I gave his dick a good squeeze, “when I’m finished with you.”

Marcus chuckled. “Seriously, Ossian, you need to work on your seduction technique.”

“Yeah?”

“Mhm.”

I flipped open his jeans and shoved my hand into his briefs.

I jerk out of the memory and shake it off; it feels wrong to think about things like that in a cemetery. Is it even allowed?

Don’t be a prude, Ossian. It’s not like you.

No, I never was a prude. I couldn’t keep my hands off Marcus, not even after being with him for close to twenty years. His body, his mind always excited me in a way that no one ever had before I met him. And all those feelings died with him. When he was no longer around, my body shut down.

My grief counselor said it was natural, that it was a part of the process, but I never really believed her. I was so certain I was going to live out the rest of my life like a dry husk, feeling nothing but pain and sadness. I’d never experience closeness again, or the exhilaration of being turned on by another person.

Seems I was wrong.

I don’t know when things changed, when my body started thawing, even warming up to someone else.

It seems to me you’re more than warmed up, baby.

“Shush,” I say without heat. But I need to know. “Would you mind?”

You know I wouldn’t.

I do know. He said it once, one night as we were cuddled up together after making love. “If I die before you, I want you to find someone else.”

At the time, I was furious with him. “Don’t say shit like that, you’re not gonna die.”

“Everyone dies, Ossian. And I don’t want you to be alone.”

Oh God, I’m so alone. I don’t want to be alone.

Guest Post | Chocolate with a Bite by Holly Day

Free Today Only

Hello, everyone! I’m here as Holly Day today 😊 Have you made it through the December frenzy so far? It’s easy to get overwhelmed with everything going on. It’s okay to walk into a room, barricade the door, and sit down to read for a bit. If you need a new story to get you through, I have just the thing for you 😆 Chocolate with a Bite is out today!

As I’m sure you’re aware by now, JMS Books has been hosting an advent calendar where one not previously published story has been given away only to then be published for real the day after. If you’ve missed it, keep an eye out next year, because we’ll be doing this again!

I’m the last person out, so today you can grab Chocolate With a Bite for $0.00 between 12:00 am EST and 11:59 pm EST. I only have one little caveat and that is that I believe you’ll enjoy it more if you’ve read A Vampire Chew Toy first.

Chocolate with a Bite is about Devin and Mars from A Vampire Chew Toy, and what you get is a peek at how they’re doing and how much M&Ms one household can consume.

So if you haven’t read A Vampire Chew Toy, hop on over to Smashwords where it’s currently 50% off, and then you hop on over to the JMS Advent calendar and grab Chocolate with a Bite for 100% off, and then you lock the door to whichever room you’re in. They should last you a few hours 😄

Chocolate with a Bite

Devin Jace lives in a huge mansion together with six other people, four of them turn furry, one needs to drink blood to survive, and one is a former blood slave, just like him. Most days he’s happy with his life with his vampire boyfriend, Mars O’Ceallaigh, but today he’s arranged a chocolate-tasting evening for everyone in the house, and Mars is nowhere to be found.

Mars has a problem. The guy delivering his blood bags can’t get hold of any, and Mars is starving. He doesn’t dare go near Devin since he’s afraid his control will shatter, and he’ll eat him. In a bad way. Without informing anyone, he sneaks out of the house to try to figure out what’s gone wrong with the blood delivery.

The night doesn’t turn out as Devin had expected, but he does his best to hide his disappointment. Mars never meant to hurt Devin’s feelings, but what is a hungry vampire to do? Eat his favorite person?

“Okay.” He nodded since he didn’t know what else to do. “So… I’ll add up the result then!” He plastered on a smile and whirled around, doing his best not to acknowledge the lump in his throat. Mars most likely had a good reason for leaving. Maybe he’d gotten hold of someone or gotten a lead or whatever. Though was a closed blood bank something you got leads on? And if there had been new information, he would have informed his team, would he not?

It didn’t matter.

Devin added up the numbers from the M&M voting, having to count several times since his head wasn’t in it. Once he had the numbers and had double-checked them, he tried to find joy in English Toffee Peanut being in the first place, but he didn’t care anymore. He heaved a sigh, worked up to a happy expression, and turned around to face the others.

“We have a result, ladies and gentlemen.” He shook the paper he’d written on to make a sound.

Hanna grinned at him. “Give it to us!”

“In tenth place, and a sign you have no taste whatsoever, we have Mexican Jalapeno Peanut.”

Hanna cheered and clapped her hands, which made Devin grin for real.

“In ninth, we have Coconut. Which is another sign you need to have your taste buds examined. I bought Wild Cherry, so we’d have a clear loser, and you fucked it up.”

Rei chuckled and leaned back in his chair.

“In eighth place, we have the real loser. Wild Cherry.”

There was a soft boo from the doorway, and Devin almost hurt his neck when he turned from the group at the table to locate the source of the sound. Dillon was hovering on the threshold.

“You should all know, Dillon has no taste either, so it’s not only you furries. He placed Wild Cherry as his favorite.” Devin grabbed the Wild Cherry bowl and slowly walked closer to Dillon. He held it out for him. “There are Maltesers and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups on the table if you want.” He spoke low to not scare him off.

“I’m good.” But he accepted the bowl, and Devin walked back to his place by the island.

“In seventh place, we have Crunchy Raspberry. Not a huge surprise, I don’t think.” There were some hums of agreement. “Then in the sixth, we have Coffee Nut.” Devin made a seesaw gesture. “In fifth, we have Dark Chocolate Creepy Cocoa Crisp. I don’t know if anyone will be sad to see it go. It’s a limited edition.” If it was. He wasn’t sure, he’d only assumed since they were Halloween-themed.

“Now it’s getting a bit interesting.” He looked at them one at a time, ending with Dillon who was still standing in the doorway. Devin was glad he’d remained for the result, even if he didn’t join the others by the table. “In fourth place, Crispy Mint! I think if I’d served coffee at the tasting, it might have climbed a spot, don’t you think?”

“Maybe.” Hanna grinned at him. “I wouldn’t mind if you bought more of them.”

“I have a couple of bags of each flavor in the pantry. I didn’t know how many you’d need to eat to be sure of your choices.” He waved a hand in the direction of the pantry and suspected they’d be gone in a couple of days. It didn’t matter. He’d stocked up on other chocolates, too. It was Christmas, and chocolate and Christmas went hand in hand. He should buy things for the Christmas dinner too; in case the store ran out of stuff. He’d never made a real Christmas dinner before, but he was looking forward to the challenge. Or had been up until now. Now he wanted to go hide in his room.

Focusing on the paper again, he took a deep breath. “In third place, Fudge Brownie.” He gave a low cheer. “Are you nervous now?” He directed the question to Murrie.

“Not at all. I know which is the best, and if you say anything else, you’ve fiddled with the result.”

Devin snorted. “I’m sorry, man, but the original only made it to second place.”

“No way.”

“Yes way. Everyone placed them high, but not as high as they placed today’s winner. English Toffee Peanut!” He clapped his hands, as did Hanna and Rei, though Rei’s claps weren’t as enthusiastic.

“That’s it, folks. I thank you for your cooperation in the important study.” He bowed and smiled as a few of the others laughed.
