Teaser Tuesday: Silent Woods

I’ve been a bad blogger! Meaning I haven’t done shit in ages. But, today is the day that’s gonna change. I blame the lovely weather we’ve had here in Sweden these last weeks and my garden for stealing me away from the screen – I go voluntarily I should add. Few things make me happier than staring at the leaves of my Habanero Dulce or smelling the flowers on my lemon tree. My husband thinks I’m insane, and he might be right.

But, I’m not writing today to talk about my garden – though, I could go on for ages (my Ophelia mini aubergines are bearing fruit! LOL I had to buy them since they were named Ophelia).

The reason I’m writing is that it’s Tuesday and now when we’re getting close to midsummer I wanted to do a post on Silent Woods.

I’ve written a couple blog posts about the Silent Woods before, but the last one was back in 2016, so I figured I’d do it again. In Silent Woods we meet The Neck, a male water nymph from the Scandinavian folklore who is as his strongest around midsummer. Beware…

A married couple with two kids go camping, but what lurks in the woods is not what they’d thought they’d encounter. There, in the middle of a lake, is a man who can make the forest go quiet simply by being, and he can control you merely by playing his violin.

The wet spider webs and the light mist that could be seen between the trees should’ve made a beautiful picture, but the glade didn’t feel as it had the day before. It felt closed off, like someone had put a giant glass bubble over us. The woods were silent, no rustling winds, and no tweeting birds. The eerie stillness that surrounded us was almost oppressive. I couldn’t help but whisper as I turned to Anders, “Is it always this quiet in the mornings?”

Anders frowned a little. “I’m sure the birds will start to sing as soon as I make my way out of here.” That did not make me feel any better. “Probably just means that there isn’t anything close by to alert them.”

I didn’t buy that. Birds sang in the morning. And I could tell he only said it to comfort me—his gaze kept searching the tree line, and he had a little crease between his brows. He lit the mini stove, gave me what I’m sure was supposed to be a reassuring smile, and headed out of the campsite.

I couldn’t shake the unnerving feeling, and it only grew more intense the longer Anders was away. It wouldn’t take him more than twenty minutes or so to cover the distance. He was a practised runner, and this little round was nothing compared to what he normally ran in the mornings. Still, I found no comfort in that. I tried to distract myself by preparing breakfast on the stove.

TEASER TUESDAY: Falling Through

FallingThroughIt’s Teaser Tuesday time! Today I thought I was gonna write a little something about Falling Through.  I had such great plans…

Falling Through is just a short little thing, 12k or thereabout, and I first wrote it to be part of an anthology but it didn’t feel right so I pulled it and Debbie over at Beaten Track Publishing took mercy on it. I had a whole world painted in my head with ghosts, and evil queens, and power imbalances and with James Dean of course, but other writing projects came in between and I never continued it. Now I only have a vague idea of what it was I wanted to write because stupid as I sometimes am I didn’t write it down.

I still intend to write a sequel, or several, because I do love these characters, it’s just that every time I think about it a wave of panic washes over me because what if I fuck up the story I had in my head? The one I can’t even remember properly.

There are too many stories in my mind. I have a list of 14 stories I need to finish, and that is the list of the started stories, the list of want-to-write stories is even longer *sigh*. It’s not really surprising that some stories fall behind but that doesn’t mean it isn’t frustrating.

Still, I do have a crush on Larry.

Larry shook a cigarette out of the pack, rolling it between his fingers before raising it to his lips. He wanted to stay with Travis, wanted to sit next to him on the sofa, wanted to reach out and touch him. Even if he could never touch Travis, he wanted to spend his time watching him.

Larry didn’t care much for people’s appearance these days. Everyone on TV had an unreal look about them, but Travis was nothing like those people.

Larry’s favourite thing in the whole world was summer nights. If the temperature was high enough, Travis went to bed naked. Larry spent those nights lying close to him, memorising every little ridge, every dimple. Had he been able to, he would’ve turned on the lights and mapped out every tiny little birthmark, every scar marring his skin. And no, it didn’t make him weird. Shadows did that…probably. What else would they do at night?

Larry slumped on the sofa. He didn’t know much. He didn’t know how anything worked anymore, didn’t know what he was allowed to do, and not allowed to do, and he couldn’t very well ask anyone.

But it didn’t matter. Sixty years he’d been loitering in this flat. Sixty years without a purpose—disheartening, if he let himself think of it. It was time he took some responsibility. If he and Travis were going to continue to live here, he needed to help out somehow. He would stop moping around and actually do something, even if it meant he would be sapped and had to spend some time in the Nothingness.

30274488Travis is running himself ragged. He’s trying to keep two jobs just to pay his rent. If he has to flirt with some creepy old women at the pub to get a little extra tip money then so be it. One day, he’ll have someone special waiting for him when he gets back home from work, or is that too much to ask? Right now isn’t the best of times to get a boyfriend anyway since Travis is going mad, but one day… Every so often, Travis gets the feeling of not being alone, and sometimes, he sees things. But he tries to stay positive; maybe there’s a strapping young fella waiting for him in the looney bin.

Larry’s existence was dead boring until Travis moved in. Now he spends his time watching Travis, fantasising about touching him, kissing him… Their movie nights would be a bit cosier if Travis knew he was there, but sometimes, you have to settle for what you can get. As far as roommates go, Travis is the best Larry has ever had, and it isn’t Travis’s fault he can’t see Larry – no one has been able to since the day he died.

When Travis loses one of his jobs, both he and Larry fear for their future. Larry can’t imagine being without Travis, and Travis is desperate to find a way to pay his bills. While Travis searches for a solution to his money problems Larry has to decide if he’s willing to risk existence as he knows it for a chance of a better life.

TEASER TUESDAY: Dazzle Me

DazzleMeI thought I should do something here on the site where I talk about my books. I realised the only time I ever post something about them is on release day and that’s a bit boring.

I debated if I should make it Teaser Tuesday posts or Throwback Thursday – because we have to have weekday in the title, do we not? And I won’t do WIP Wednesday because you’d grow bored before I manage to finish something.

But I figured with a Teaser Tuesday it could be both old and new stories. It might not be the way people meant for the Teaser Tuesday hashtag to be used, but this is my blog, I can do what I want. I won’t do these posts every week – I’d run out of stories sometime in the summer if I did, but maybe once or twice a month.

So today I’m gonna talk about a story that’s actually very dear to me. I say actually because I often love my stories while writing them and then when they’re out there in the real world my feelings tend to wilt a little. But simply seeing the cover of Dazzle Me makes me smile.

I wrote it back in 2015 as part of the Summer Bigger Than Others anthology. I don’t remember exactly what the prompt was but I think it was that it should be short light-hearted summer fun. And I had a lot of fun writing Dazzle Me.

It’s a 41 pages long silly story about Tom and his boyfriend Santino. Their one-year anniversary is coming up and Tom has this romantic vision of how it’s gonna play out – it’s not going to go how he’d planned.

I saw a segment on TV from a spa somewhere where they had these pedicure fish and stuff – Tom is going to a spa, he goes reluctantly, but he’s going because he thinks Santino wants him to.

Do you guys have any idea how many crazy spa treatments there are? I would never allow fish to eat at my feet but poor Tom doesn’t have a choice, does he? Of course not, I made him have to endure fish and worse!

I sat and dipped my toe into the water. It was pleasantly warm—not hot, just warm. With a sigh, I put both of my feet in there and spread my toes as I eyed the water.

“Eek!” I snatched my feet back up, almost kneeing myself in the chin since I’d been bending to look into the water. Hundreds of small fish swam around in there. Disgusting. I glanced around the room in hopes of no one having heard my squeal. No one but Mahdi seemed to have, and he tried really hard to conceal his laughter.

“The fish are good for you, Mr. Williams.” He gestured for me to put my feet in again. I looked down, swallowed, and rechecked the water. There sure as hell were fish in the basin. I gaped at Mahdi; surely he didn’t mean for me to put my feet in there?

Obviously he did because he was gesturing for me to do just that.

My big toe broke the surface. Instantly a few fish swam to it. I had to steel myself not to pull my foot out of the water. The fish started feasting on me. I closed my eyes to escape the vision. No more aquariums for me. It were as if I’d put my toe down in a glass of soda water. With a deep breath I put both my feet in there, feeling the nibbling, but trying not to think about what was doing the nibbling. God, it was gross, wasn’t it? Having fish eat at you. What the hell had Santino been thinking?

Dazzle Me is greatly misunderstood, how else is it that hardly anyone had read it? Could be that there’s a snail on the cover…could be, but Tom shouldn’t have to be a headless torso on a cover too – he has enough of a headache dealing with the snails.

25587452Tom has been planning for months, but in those plans he never once found himself on a spa table in Bangkok on his and Santino’s one year anniversary. He doesn’t do aeroplanes, doesn’t like the tropical climate, and he does not do spas.

Yet there he is, without a stitch of clothing, and with a man he’s never met before. He’ll do his best to enjoy his day and then he’ll give Santino the best anniversary imaginable, even if it means he has to be covered in chopped-up veggies on him for an entire day…

…if only it were veggies.
