Friday Reads | Dynamics (Army Boys #1)

Yesterday evening I realised I hadn’t read anything since last my Friday Reads post. It’s been a hectic week, lots of things going on, and I was tired. So, I needed something quick and easy. As so many times before I hopped over to Amazon’s 15 minutes reads list, I’ve read just about everything there is (which isn’t much) on the free tab but I hadn’t read Dynamics (Army Boys #1) by Maria Santicelli.

Dynamics is the first in a series and since it’s such a short story I figured it would be an introduction to the main character, and it is, sort of. Trouble is there were so many characters I had no idea of knowing who was who or what the relationship between them was like.

It’s listed as LGBT but the MC, Ty Black, likes women ‘thank you very much’ though he ‘knew sex with women could be a luxury, something that was a reward for surviving a mission.’

The last lines hint at the possibility of Ty and his teammate becoming more than friends in the future, I won’t continue reading to find out, though. I’m not saying it’s a bad story but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. I get that it takes place during DADT and that it complicates things, but I’ll leave it up someone else to follow these men into battle.

– Short Story –

Army ranger Ty Black muses about the group dynamics of his camp in general and his all male team in particular. It’s not easy living the army life, especially in close quarters.

“Dynamics” is the first part of a series that centers around the life and relationships of army ranger Ty Black and his team mates. Nothing runs ever smoothly for any of them, and when inappropriate, unwanted feelings make their existence known, they find it hard to deal with the consequences. Escalation seems inevitable and all they can do is grappling for personal happiness the best way they can.

Other installments in the series / suggested reading order:

(Dynamics)
Perplexity
Keepsakes
Rupture
Diremption

Friday Reads | Babyvamp

It’s Friday in NaNo times, my MIL is on the incoming, and I really need to vacuum before she gets here. In other words, I’ll keep it short today.  I’m about halfway through Lyssa Dering‘s Babyvamp, my first ever Lyssa Dering story.

I’m enjoying it so far. Max is on his way from having fed when he comes across a newborn, a newly turned vampire, who is in a hunger haze. He takes in the new vamp and even though he should go to the vampire police he doesn’t. When he finds out the new vamp’s maker is his own things get complicated.

I like that even though Max is a very nice individual who cares for everyone around him, this is a rather bloody little tale. It’s also nice that the vampires are a part of the society—there is a police department for vampires, rules about how vampires should create new vampires, blood escort services etc. It makes a well thought through story.

If you like vampires, you should check it out!

Cover Babyvamp by Lyssa DeringForty-four-year-old vampire Max lives a mostly solitary existence in an attempt to avoid “vampire drama,” but when he spots abandoned babyvamp Kieran on his way to the club one night, his pesky conscience demands that he rescue him and confront the vampire who turned him. Problem is, Kieran’s creator is Max’s ex-lover James, an emotionally abusive, older vampire whose very presence throws Max into a heart-beating panic. James isn’t happy that Kieran tattled on him, and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep Max from divulging his offense to the vampire police, including risking Kieran’s life to make Max his rightful guardian. But Max never wanted to be anyone’s guardian. And if Kieran gets his way, he’ll have more than Max’s constant care and attention. He’ll have his sexual submission, too.

Friday Reads | Body of Work

Most of the books I’ve written about this last month have included vampires, and I’m continuing the theme—it’s that kind of month. In Amy Spector’s Body of Work (Cold Fingers #2), it isn’t the MC that’s a vampire. If you’ve read Cold Fingers (Cold Fingers #1), you know that Christopher Minnick is special in his own way but a vamp he is not. No, here it is the fabulous Lee Hellstrom is finding his way back into the limelight and by his side, he has everyone’s favourite boy, Grant Cooper, flashing fangs. Grant isn’t the only having fangs, though.

I love this story, it’s funny and yet quite bloody. The characters are amazing, and I really sympathise with poor Christopher. It’s not easy when you’re trying not to draw attention to yourself, and your old friend drags a TV team to your house. And it’s not easy when the shit hits the fan, and the same old friend goes missing.

This time of year I always envy everyone celebrating Halloween. We Swedes are so boring. If you want to get in the mood for the holiday, bring out the garlic, and check out Body of Work (after you’ve read Cold Fingers of course).

Have you seen that cover? I can look at that bloody mouth all day! Amy is the artist behind it, and many other book covers worth more than a quick glance.

32734576Life with Vic isn’t exactly what Christopher Minnick was expecting. His boyfriend has given him a new lease on life – literally – but he doesn’t have a job, Jessie thinks he’s a ghost, and there are only so many closets on hand for shoving Jonathan into. Now, with Lee back in the limelight, things just might become more than Christopher can handle.

Lee Hellstrom is hitting the big screen after more than three decades and, with the much younger Grant Cooper at his side on the red carpet, he plans to make a lasting impression. The only problem is that not all the attention Lee has drawn is good.

When Lee goes missing, it’s up to Christopher, Vic, and Grant to save the old man from a most horrible of fates.

Christopher’s life may not have been perfect, but his death is a pain in the ass.
