A – Z | Killer Cassava!

I went hunting for a K on Amazon and came back with Killer Cassava!: A One-Hour Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Short Read (Gluten-Free Gay Mystery Book 1) by Joss Clark.

Ever since Corona hit, I’ve had a hard time reading. I’ve written some, but reading just doesn’t hold my attention, so I figured something short would be good. I found this among the one-hour reads on Amazon, and being gluten intolerant the title caught my attention.

This is a quick, funny read and every chapter ends with a recipe – gluten-free, of course! I would’ve wanted to know a bit more about the characters. Since I didn’t ‘know’ them, there was no way I could figure out who the murderer was, couldn’t even guess, and I do like to be able to at least guess.

And while it’s cute to have a guy talking to his cat, I kept wondering what the health authorities would have to say about Gregory bringing his cat into his bakery kitchen.

If you’re looking for romance, this isn’t it. It’s a cosy mystery, a story about a baker and his cat, and at one point he gazes longingly into the eyes of a police officer LOL. But, it was interesting enough to hold my attention. I mean, who doesn’t like murders??

A – Z | Everybody in the Place

Oh, I needed that! I’ve just read Suki Fleet’s Everybody in the Place and I really needed the escape it offered. We need books (all art) at times like this.

Have you read Suki Fleet? I’ve read quite a few of her books, and while she’s usually writing YA, which is a genre I tend to avoid, I do read her books. Her stories are beautiful and her writing style unique. If you haven’t tried anything by her, do!

Everybody in the Place isn’t YA…or I guess maybe it is. One of the main characters, Benji, is nineteen, but Alfie is a little older. The story starts with Alfie getting drunk in a park, he’s lost his job that same day, and should be at a birthday party, but is getting drunk in his lonesome instead.

Benji sees him and goes to talk to him. Alfie left them all a year ago, and a day hasn’t gone by without Benji wishing he came back. The feelings they had for each other hasn’t gone away, but Alfie’s best friend is Benji’s older brother and they both fear what the reactions will be if they get together.

Alfie fears more than that. He’s been running from emotions all his life, and while Benji is just what he needs, he’s afraid to let him in.

I loved this so much! There’s an age difference, but it’s Benji, who’s the younger of the two, who’s the grounded, secure one. He’s a safe haven for Alfie. And this isn’t a long story, 67 pages I think it said, but that’s all you need when it’s done right.

49113872._sy475_Alfie Adams comes at life sideways.
After unexpectedly losing his job in television, and having the script he’s worked so hard on unceremoniously dropped, Alfie turns up at his oldest friend, Jam’s, birthday party drunk, pretty sure his world has ended, and that he’s about to hit rock bottom with a bone-cracking thud.
But it’s funny how Jam’s little brother, Benji, seems to know exactly what Alfie needs. For the past twelve months Alfie has thrown himself into his job and tried hard not to think about beautiful punk-loving Benji—tried not to see how the sweet kid he used to look out for, and who used to trail so adoringly after him, has grown up into a big lad with an even bigger heart. As Alfie sobers up, he begins to see things with a new perspective, and Benji has his full attention.
If only Alfie can admit what it is he wants.

A – Z |The Dark Horse

I’ve read The Dark Horse (The Dark Horse #1) by Josh Lanyon which means D now is completed as well. I guess most M/M readers have come across books by Ms Lanyon. I’ve read my fair share, though far from all of them. This, for example, is from 2012, so quite a few years old now. I think, of all Lanyon stories I’ve read, Winter (The Haunted Heart #1) is my favourite, but this isn’t bad either.

We have a tough detective and Hollywood actor who has managed to attract a stalker – all in classic Lanyon fashion.

As a teen Sean, the actor, had some mental health problems, and that makes everyone around act as if he’s fragile and unable to see things clearly. He might begin to believe them, but when his best friend and his lover start making decisions for him, things go from bad to worse.

While this is a mystery, a chase to get to the stalker before it’s too late, it’s just as much a story about a fragile relationship and what lack of trust and communication might cause.

It’s Lanyon, you know what you get, you know it’s gonna be good, so if you’re in the mood, check it out.

The Dark Horse by Josh LanyonLove is a dark horse—and Sean Fairchild is in for the ride of his life.

Paul Hammond is dead. That’s what tough and sexy LAPD Detective Daniel Moran tells his lover, Hollywood actor Sean Fairchild—and Sean wants to believe him, but what about those threatening postcards in Hammond’s handwriting? What about the fact that he’s seeing Hammond everywhere he goes? Yes, Sean’s had some emotional problems in the past, but that was a long time ago and he’s not imagining things, so why is Dan looking at him that way?

The last thing Sean needs is someone doubting him, especially when he’s competing for the coveted leading role in the screen adaptation of The Charioteer. But then again, as ex-lover and manager Steve points out, what does Sean really know about his new boyfriend?

Dan is a dark horse—and maybe Sean is betting too much on this relationship. It’s not just Sean’s career at stake, or his relationship, or even his sanity—-it’s his life.
